This conference brings together two Horizon Europe projects that are promoting integration of gender equality objective into technologically focused solutions to societal challenges. gEneSys tackles gendered power relations in energy transition and NET4Air is building capacity for applying nanoelectronics in the monitoring of air pollution.
The aim of the conference is to report on new research findings produced by the two projects and discuss what lessons can be drawn to advance implementations of the EU policy on mainstreaming gender into research and innovation, and specifically for Horizon Europe and the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2021-2027.
Women are significantly underrepresented in both the deep tech and energy transition fields as researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, decision makers, and leaders. The average share of women in the R&I workforce in energy sector companies in the EU27 is 22%. Only 14% of founders in deep tech startups are women. Results from gEneSys suggest that knowledge-making for energy transition is dominated by men and this may impact on what research is prioritised, and how it is communicated and valorised.
The event should be of interest to science policy and decision makers, technical and policy advisers, domain experts, researchers and innovators, and practitioners promoting knowledge for social progress.

Webinar: Integrating research evidence on gender-energy nexus to achieve just and equitable outcomes in the African / European energy transition efforts
To maximise the contribution of Horizon Europe projects to create just, equitable and socially acceptable transition to carbon-neutrality for all, the EU LEAP-RE (Long-Term Joint European Union - African Union Research and Innovation Partnership on Renewable Energy) and the gEneSys (Transforming Gendered Interrelations of Power and Inequalities in Transition Pathways to Sustainable Energy Systems) projects hosted a joint webinar on 3rd June 2024 at 10:30 – 12:00 CEST. The webinar used the format of roundtable discussion with speakers from the two projects sharing lessons from the gEneSys research and LEAP-RE implementation projects on the opportunities to incorporate gender - and social-equality benefits into energy transition goals and pathways.

gEneSys introduced a participatory workshop on decision making for fair and just energy transition, at the Energy, Environment and Societies in Crises ESA RN12 mid-term and Energy &Society Network 6th international joint conference in Trento, 6-8 September 2023.
Lucio Pisacane the gEneSys Coordinator took part as Panel Speaker in the 23rd Gender Summit - Africa, 1–2 June 2023, on the theme of Africa’s Energy Transition Pathways and the visions of the Green Deal through the gender lens. The work of the project was also disseminated as part of the GS23 Exhibition.
